Nevada Law vs. Verbal Harassment, Part 3 of 3

Today we’ll introduce laws that protect young people specifically from harassment by predatory adults, as well as the law regarding solicitation of prostitution.

NRS 207.260
Unlawful Contact with Child…
A person who, without lawful authority, willfully and maliciously engages in a course of conduct with a child who is under 16 years of age and who is at least 5 years younger than the person which would cause a reasonable child of like age to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated or harassed, and which actually causes the child to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated or harassed, commits the crime of unlawful contact with a child.

If you are under the age of 16 and a harasser’s behavior makes you feel terrorize, frightened, intimidated, or harassed then that person can be reported under this law.

I am 14 years old…I look older but I am only 14. My dad never lets me go out by my self because of the neighbor hood we live in. Well one day he finally let me go by myself I was thankful because I wanted to go to a church but I really didn’t need my parents tagging along to make a confession. I was walking and I realized the church lights weren’t on so I decided to call the church. As I am on the phone a red truck drives by, he honks and waves his had at me. If that wasn’t enough he turned back and did it again…2 time…3 times, it happened. I was scared out of my mind. He was trying to pull the truck up close to me and talk to me. I didn’t see his face clearly because of my eye sight so I have no idea if he might have actually been someone I know but I’m 14 years old. I am terrified. It literally just happened and I ran home. I so scared, I was thinking of calling 911 about it but I don’t know if I should. None of the details were clear I was in panic. What should I do should I report it? what is it was someone who actually knew me? WHAT SHOULD I DO?!?!?!

NRS 207.270
Loitering About School or Public Place Where Children Congregate
Any person who, without legitimate reason to supervise any of such children or other legitimate reason to be at leisure in such place, loiters about any school or public place at or near which children attend or normally congregate is guilty of a misdemeanor.

Unless an adult has a legitimate reason to be on a school campus or other place where children regularly gather (like a playground), their presence there is considered loitering. This is especially important with regard to harassers who specifically target teens. If you are being harassed by an adult near your school or other similar, that person can be reported under this law.

My sister is no longer allowed to walk to the bus stop for school because this guy kept following her in his car and offering her rides. She has a short temper and told him to fuck off and he was about to get out of his car mad but luckily nothing happened. Sucks that a student can’t walk to the school bus without worrying about getting harassed.

NRS 201.354
Solicitation for Prostitution
1.  It is unlawful for any person to engage in prostitution or solicitation therefor, except in a licensed house of prostitution.
2.  Except as otherwise provided in subsection 3, a person who violates subsection 1 is guilty of a misdemeanor.
3.  A person who violates subsection 1 by soliciting a child for prostitution is guilty of a category E felony…

Soliciting prostitution (outside of a legal brothel) is illegal in Nevada. If a street harasser solicits sexual activity from you seriously or not (i.e. “how much?”, “are you working?”, or offering you anything in exchange for sexual behavior) you can report them for soliciting prostitution. If you are under the age of 18, the street harasser can be charged with a felony.
